Iran has asked the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) to support its efforts to join the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The request was made by Iran Trade Development Organization’s Chief Valiollah Afkhami Rad during his meeting with UNCTAD Deputy Secretary General Joakim Reiter, IRIB news agency reported March 7.

“We are ready to be actively present in the UNCTAD ministers meeting in Nairobi,” he said, asking for the UN body to offer Iran technical service.

The Rouhani administration has been trying to pave a way for Iran’s joining the WTO, the most well-known of which being the nuclear deal with world powers, which lifted economic sanctions on Iran.

Afkhami Rad said as sanctions are lifted, Iranian-made products will come at lower prices and will have a chance to compete in the world market.

According to the official, goods used to be produced by 5 to 6 percent higher than their normal cost under the sanctions.

The UN official for his part expressed hope that Iran can find its place in the world market, adding the UNCTAD is making efforts to transfer technology to Iran to help it join the world economy more easily.
