The government of Ethiopia and the Humanitarian Country Team (HCT) are appealing for (USD) $1.4 billion to respond the worsening humanitarian crisis exacerbated by the El Niño weather phenomenon.

El-Niño has exacerbated the humanitarian situation across the Horn of Africa region. Ethiopia is the most affected and is facing its worst drought in five decades. Today, 10.2 million people need humanitarian food assistance and 450,000 children under five are severely malnourished.

The Government of Ethiopia and the Humanitarian Country Team seek US$1.4 billion to respond, warning that current fundings available for food aid will be exhausted by 1 May.

Each day without food assistance increases human suffering, lengthens recovery period, strains humanitarian and development systems, and exponentially increases intervention cost. This can be prevented, with an adequately funded humanitarian response today.
