In the last few weeks, the World Food Programme (WFP) and its humanitarian partners reached more people in besieged areas than at any other time since the beginning of the conflict, providing life-saving support including food and nutrition products to thousands of families.

WFP carried out over twenty two airdrops over the besieged eastern Syrian city of Deir Ezzor, dropping urgently needed food assistance – mainly rice, chickpeas, vegetable oil, sugar, salt, bulgur and beans — to meet the immediate needs of over 100,000 people.

Over the weekend, two simultaneous inter-agency convoys accessed the besieged towns of Madaya and Zabadani in rural Damascus and Foah and Kifriyeh in rural Idleb.

WFP delivered wheat flour enough to feed 60,000 vulnerable people living in these areas. The wheat flour will compliment food rations delivered by ICRC. WFP has already delivered nutrition supplies for the prevention and treatment of acute malnutrition for nearly 7,000 children.

The UN food agency has delivered food assistance for almost 3.9 million people during the month of April.
